Not a back-killing monster like most of them, but big enough to be called a messenger bag. Also unlike many of them, the main compartment on this one zips closed. The two front pockets are perfect for phone, iPod, even a small bottle of water. I travel a lot and it would be too small for me as a "departure" carry-on. I used it until it fell apart and then tried unsucessfully for years to find an adequate replacement. Now I have a closet full of messenger bags that I don't like. Now I've found the same bag again and I'm thrilled. I do wish it had some zipper pockets on the sides for sunglasses or cell phones, but I'm just happy to have my bag again.
